Meera Syal

Award-winning British-Indian playwright and actor Meera Syal will be presented with a BAFTA (British Academy of Film and Television Arts) fellowship, the highest accolade bestowed upon an individual in recognition of an outstanding and exceptional contribution to film, games or television.

Syal, who starred in hit BBC comedies, ‘Goodness Gracious Me’ and ‘The Kumars at No 42’, will be honoured at the BAFTA Television Awards, which will take place on May 14 at the Royal Festival Hall.

“I am thrilled and honoured to be the recipient of the BAFTA Fellowship. I am particularly delighted that this year’s award is twinned with opportunities to mentor and support participants in BAFTA’s learning programme — where I hope to engage with many talented practitioners and continue working to make BAFTA a truly representative and celebratory place for all our creatives,” Syal said.

As part of the fellowship, she will work directly with the arts charity over the coming year to inspire and nurture aspiring creatives through BAFTA’s year-round learning, inclusion and talent programmes.

She will be seen in two new major series this autumn — ‘The Wheel of Time’ and ‘Mrs Siddhu Investigates’.

Alongside her MBE and CBE awards, Syal has brought her distinctive voice to the UK’s creative arts across multiple artistic genres over four decades, with more than 140 credits and counting. Born to Punjabi parents from New Delhi, Syal’s cross-cultural stories and performances have played an instrumental force in showcasing the positive representation of British-Asian stories and talent on screen, a BAFTA statement said.

Her work has scored multiple BAFTA nominations and wins, features on school and university syllabuses, and was said to be among Her Majesty the Queen’s favourite TV programmes.

Syal has also received the Women In Film and TV Award for Creative Innovation, honorary doctorates from SOAS, Manchester and Birmingham Universities and was the Cameron Mackintosh Visiting Professor of Contemporary Theatre at the Oxford University in 2012.

Born in Wolverhampton in the West Midlands and educated at Manchester University, Syal read English and Drama, gaining a Double First.

Her career began at the Royal Court, and alongside her many and continuing theatre roles, her talent saw her quickly graduate to screenwriting — scripting ‘Bhaji on the Beach’ in 1993 and ‘My Sister Wife’ in 1994 — as well as writing and performing in the pioneering comedy sketch-show ‘The Real McCoy’ (1991-1994).

Two of her novels have also been adapted for the screen — ‘Anita and Me’ (2002) and ‘Life Isn’t All Ha Ha Hee Hee’ (2005).

Syal has also since taken on roles in popular television series and programmes such as ‘Beautiful People’ (2008-2009), ‘Dr Who’ (2009), ‘Horrible Histories’ (2009), ‘Broadchurch’ (2015), ‘The Split’ (2018-2022), among others.

The BAFTA Television Awards with P&O Cruises will be hosted by comedians Rob Beckett and Romesh Ranganathan and will be broadcast on BBC One and iPlayer.

A week’s guest: Manasvi Mamgai evicted from ‘Bigg Boss 17’

Mumbai: Former beauty queen Manasvi Mamgai was shown the exit door during the Weekend Ka Vaar episode on Saturday.

Just a week after her entry on Salman Khan’s show, Manasvi was evicted by getting less votes.

She entered last week as a wildcard alongside Samarth Jurel.

This week, maximum votes for nominations went to Samarth Jurel, Isha Malviya, Arun Srikanth Mashettey, Sana Raees Khan.

Manasvi was named by the ‘Dimaag’ house in the show. After her nomination, Manasvi tried her bit to be seen in the show by getting into a fight with Anurag, whom she called a traitor.

They also locked horns after the YouTuber said that she is not from Uttarakhand and keeps repeating it for votes. Manasvi also got into trouble with Bigg Boss during the ration task, when she went to change her clothes ahead of the task without listening to the full instructions.

She was also called out for disrupting the shooting as she wrote ‘Anurag is a traitor’ on mirrors, which have cameras recording the contestants 24×7.

Britney Spears gets in holiday mood, wears red cutout dress

Los Angeles: Pop icon Britney Spears has shared a post on Instagram, in which she posed in a red floor-length one-shoulder gown and celebrated some end-of-the-year festivities.

“Merry Halloween Christmas New Years Thanksgiving (sic)”, Spears — who released her memoir, ‘The Woman in Me’, last month — wrote in her caption, reports People magazine.

In the clip, the ‘Circus’ singer smiled and twirled around her home’s living area, where a lit-up Christmas tree could be seen behind her.

Spears’ latest video was shared after her memoir sold 1.1 million copies in its first week of sales. According to Gallery Books, a division of Simon & Schuster, the total sums up pre-orders, ebooks, print books and audiobooks formats.

As per People, the audiobook version of the memoir, in which Spears voices the introduction and actress Michelle Williams narrates the rest of the book, is the fastest-selling audiobook in the publisher’s history, Gallery Books added.

“I poured my heart and soul into my memoir, and I am grateful to my fans and readers around the world for their unwavering support,” Spears said in a news release earlier this week. A fourth printing of Spear’s memoir is now in the works following the high demand for the book in the U.S. and internationally, according to Gallery Books.

In her memoir, Spears details the trials she faced in her career and in her conservatorship. She also opens up about motherhood and her past relationships, most notably with ex Justin Timberlake.

She spoke to People about why it was important for her to share her story ahead of the memoir’s release.

“Over the past 15 years or even at the start of my career, I sat back while people spoke about me and told my story for me,” she said last month. “After getting out of my conservatorship, I was finally free to tell my story without consequences from the people in charge of my life.”

She added: “It is finally time for me to raise my voice and speak out, and my fans deserve to hear it directly from me. No more conspiracy, no more lies — just me owning my past, present and future.”
