PGA Tour: Korean golfer Im enjoys fast start with 66 at RBC Heritage: South Korean golfer Sungjae Im found his touch just in time in the opening round of the US$20 million RBC Heritage championship, a key event on the Professional Golfers’ Association (PGA) Tour.

An early bogey jolted Sungjae Im into life as he fired a superb 5-under 66 in the first round of the event for a share of fifth place, two back of clubhouse leader Viktor Hovland.

The World No. 17 was hot with his iron play at Harbour Town Golf Links on Thursday as five of his six birdies were inside of nine feet while he holed a monstrous 36-footer for birdie on the seventh, having started the day from the 10th hole.

Im emerged as the leading Asian in the eighth designated tournament of the PGA Tour 2022-23 season, a sign of his recent run of good form where his last four starts have seen him finish inside the top-21 including a tied sixth at THE PLAYERS Championship last month and a T16 at last week’s Masters Tournament.

Compatriot Si Woo Kim opened with a 70 while Tom Kim and K.H. Lee shot matching 71s to lie just outside the projected cut mark.

Im, who is chasing a third PGA Tour victory, dropped a shot on his second hole, the 11th, after failing to save par from the greenside bunker. It however sparked his round as he rebounded quickly with a tap-in birdie at the next hole before adding a second birdie from five feet on the 15th hole from yet another decisive approach shot.

Poor weather disrupted his afternoon round but Im finished strongly with four birdies over his last five holes.

“With a bogey at the start, I didn’t make it easy. But I made up with a birdie at the next hole which was a great turning point. We had to endure a suspension of play and I felt a bit tired waiting. However, after I got back on course, I was able to make birdies again, so overall it was a great round,” Im was quoted by PGA Tour as saying in a story on its website.

Im is making his fifth start at the RBC Heritage, which has in recent years produced Asian winners in Satoshi Kodaira of Japan (2018) and Chinese Taipei’s C.T. Pan (2019). Pan, making a return from a five-month injury layoff, opened with a 73.

The 25-year-old Hovland, who was the co-first round leader at the Masters before finishing tied seventh, fired a bogey-free 64 as he chases a fourth PGA Tour win. Newly-crowned Masters winner Jon Rahm, who is also the World No. 1, opened with a 72 while defending champion Jordan Spieth shot a 68.

Im is looking to sustain his title charge on Friday, keen to take advantage of the morning conditions.

“Since I had a good start, I will be playing in the morning and I am looking forward to another great round. On this golf course, you need to hit your driver well to be in a position to attack. There are some challenges for some second shots where you need to shape the shots into the greens. I will stick to my game plan,” said Im, who hit 10 of 14 fairways in his first round.

IPL 2023: Fearless Faf du Plessis aims to be more aggressive for Royal Challengers Bangalore

IPL 2023: Fearless Faf du Plessis aims to be more aggressive for Royal Challengers Bangalore

Royal Challengers Bangalore skipper Faf Du Plessis has been one of the most important pillars of the sides batting line-up in the ongoing 2023 Indian Premier League (IPL).

As of now, du Plessis has scored 511 runs in 10 matches with a strike rate of 157.71, holding the Orange Cap awarded to the highest run-getter in the competition. Ahead of Tuesday’s match against Mumbai Indians at Wankhede Stadium, du Plessis aims to be more aggressive with his bat in the remaining matches to take the team to the play-offs.

“I have really been quite intentional about trying to get hundreds, finding gears I can work through mid-innings period and try and get to innings as we can get 75 plus,” stated Faf Du Plessis in an RCB Bold Diaries video.

The former South Africa captain has gone a notch higher in IPL 2023 in terms of changing gears during the innings and hitting more boundaries which have also contributed to his increased strike rate.

“In the past, I always felt like I had a decent attacking game but I felt like there was another gear in terms of taking your strike rate from 130 to 150 at least and then sometimes 160-170 so, I have worked on that a lot. But it is also important for me to try and play as much cricket as possible just to try and stay on top of my game,” he added.

After a seven-wicket defeat to Delhi Capitals, Bangalore are currently at fifth spot in the points table with five wins and as many losses in 10 games. A win against Mumbai will boost the chances of du Plessis & Co making it to the playoffs.

IPL 2023: Wriddhiman Saha is such a phenomenal guy, says Shubman Gill

IPL 2023: Wriddhiman Saha is such a phenomenal guy, says Shubman Gill

Opener Shubman Gill, who slammed an unbeaten 94 for Gujarat Titans and put on 142 runs off 74 balls for the opening stand with Wriddhiman Saha, praised his ‘phenomenal’ opening partner for scoring 81 off 43 balls and setting the foundation for a 56-run win over Lucknow Super Giants.

“He is such a phenomenal guy. Looking at the way he keeps, he bats; it’s just great to see someone putting in so much effort for the team, day in and day out. This was just the result of the hard work that he has been putting in,” said Gill in a video posted by the franchise on Monday.

While Gill hit seven sixes and two fours, Saha smashed 10 fours and four sixes in taking Lucknow’s bowlers to cleaners. “I think the intent was always there. It was only coming together at the right moment.”

“With the kind of batting line-up that we have and the kind of practices and process that we’ve been going through, this kind of performance was just around the corner,” added Gill on the stunning performance from the opening pair helping Gujarat post 227/2.

Though Lucknow raised to 72/0 in powerplay, they soon ran out of steam in the face of a high required run-rate and ended up at 171/7, with pacer Mohit Sharma taking 4/29 in his four overs.

“Our bowlers were a bit under pressure, with the power-play that they had. Coming back the way we did was just great. It was definitely a great win for us. We’ve been playing our best cricket in the past three or four matches in batting and bowling,” concluded Gill.

Now on top of the points table with 16 points from 11 games, Gujarat’s next match in IPL 2023 will be against Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede Stadium on Friday.
